I wasn’t going to participate in Nanowrimo this year for a variety of reasons. The biggest is that I have been in a frenzy of editing and submitting and I didn’t want to stop that. But I haven’t written consistently since I finished one of my WIP in June. I did participate in Camp Nanowrimo but only wrote 11k words.
I think it is a combination of some big life changes as well as just burn out. Starting in Nanowrimo 2016 until June 2017, I wrote just over 243,000 words, give or take. Part of that was rewriting an 84,000 word novel but that number doesn’t count the many poems and short stories along the way (it would take too long to add up the word counts on those). I have completed many manuscripts but I haven’t completed any of my series. I wanted to push myself to finish the Leslie Kim Serial, but I am not yet decided whether I will completely rewrite the 2nd and 3rd serials that I have already completed or not.
I have decided to finish a series for Nanowrimo this year. I think I need to, so that I feel like I can finish something that I started years ago. I have been writing a middle grade trilogy that I really love. It’s not very similar to anything else I have written though. It is just written for a very different demographic, but I love the story and I need to see it through. It is actually my favorite story that I have ever written and I want the trilogy to be complete before I continue submitting it to publishers.
My word goal isn’t going to be 50,000 for this middle grade novel since that would overshoot for the genre a bit. I am going to try and write 35k in the third book and then maybe go back and rewrite the 2nd or 3rd for the rest of November. Of course, if I surpass 35k then I can always cut the fat later.
I am going to try and update my blog once a week during Nanowrimo, like I did last year. Best of luck to all of you who are participating!
