Best Kids Books for Ages 6-9 years

If you’re looking for great books for kids ages 6-9, I’m here to give you a pretty great list. I have personally read all of these books, either when I was a kid or to a kid as an adult. This age group of early readers can sometimes be hard to shop for because they are old enough to understand complicated story lines, but not always advanced enough to read chapter books on their own. I hope this helps simplify your search for awesome kids books!

Magic Tree House

Mary Pope Osbourne has been captivating kids with the Magic Tree House book series for years. These books were some of the first that I remember reading and absolutely devouring. They have excited story lines, but the words and purposefully simple enough that early readers won’t stumble over every word. But they are also not so simple that the writing feels stunted and frustrating.

These books are also pretty short at around 60-70 pages each, so if you’re reading them with a little kiddo at night, they aren’t nearly as big of a commitment. I love these books and I hope the little ones in your life will too.

Hank the Cowdog

While this series is kind of marketed at boys, you can bet your bottom dollar that I used to grab the books on tape from my local library when I was a little girl. These were the perfect bedtime stories because they were interesting and funny, but not too scary that I couldn’t sleep after listening to them. The events of the books are pretty low stakes (like hunting a giant flying monster bird that is actually just an airplane) but the way the story is told is hilarious and unexpected. It pokes fun at old western novels, so if you’re familiar with those then you will get a kick out of Hank the Cowdog.

Because of Winn-Dixie

This book is more in the upper range of these stories, targeted at 8-11 year old readers. But I loved this story when I was little. I always wished I had found a dog in my grocery store! And if your little one likes the book, you might like watching the movie together after. This is a feel-good, silly, and comforting story that any child will love.

My Side of the Mountain

This book is a classic and I’m always shocked when someone hasn’t read it. When I was a kid, everyone was scrambling to be the next one to check it out from the library. I will say that this book does encourage a very independent child view. The main character runs away from home to go live in the woods and his parents don’t really care about it. This isn’t glossed over by the wonder of everything he finds there, but as a kid the part that appealed to me most was how he was able to survive out there.

In the story, he does things like make a home inside of a tree and make tea out of tree needles. If you do read this book with your child, it might encourage a love of nature. You just might want to emphasize which parts of the story would be safe for them to pretend to do themselves and maybe explain why running away from home isn’t a way to solve their problems. But for readers that can separate fiction from reality, this book might make them look up at the trees with a whole new level of respect. I loved this book and didn’t run away or run into trouble by trying the wrong berries in my backyard, but you know your child best.
