How My Story is Doing on Kindle Vella
On July 14, Kindle Vella officially launched! The first 11 episodes of The Disappearance of Susannah Dane went live and it was pretty amazing. At launch, my story was ranking about #110 in the story and from there it continued to climb! Soon after launch it hit the Top Faved list and earned a cute little crown next to the cover.
Here it is sitting at #50 on the Top Faved list:
It also hit #2 on the Mystery Tag and #3 on Young Adult, which was so exciting!
Two days after launch, the book is still ranking at #50, though it has fluctuated between #46 and #70. I’m not sure what makes a book more popular than another. It might be total number of reads, thumbs up on individual episodes, and possibly the “Fave” that each reader is awarded per week. I don’t know all of the specifics, but I’m very happy to have my story featured!
How Does Kindle Vella Work?
I know there has been some confusion about how the new platform works. There is an iOS app, but not an Android app. You can read it on your phone using the Kindle Vella website links (like this one) using any Amazon account. You don’t have to have a specific “Kindle Vella” account.
Each story is broken into episodes. Some stories are ongoing, like mine, and some are already completed. You can follow stories that you love and leave reviews when you are done.
Sadly, Kindle Vella is only available to US readers right now. But I am hopeful that it will be available internationally once it is out of Beta!
How Do Tokens Work?
Readers have access to the first three episodes of every story for free. From there, you can keep reading if you love it or move on to something else. To keep reading past the first three episodes, readers must purchase tokens. Right now, Amazon is gifting 200 free tokens to some readers, so claim those if you can!
The amount of tokens required to buy each episode will depend on how long each episode is. Most of my episodes costs around 24 tokens, with some as long as 42 and others as short as 6. You can purchase 200 tokens for $1.99.
How Can You Support Your Favorite Stories on Kindle Vella?
- One thing I love about this new platform is that it allows for more interaction between readers and authors. I get to leave Author’s Notes at the end of episodes and readers can share that they love an episode by clicking the thumbs up icon at the end of each episode.
- You can also follow my story so that you will know when each new episode is released.
- And you can Crown Your Fave stories once a week. You can also leave a review for the story once you’ve finished reading.
All of the above items help to improve the ranking of your favorite story and increase the likelihood that more readers will find the books!
You can start reading The Disappearance of Susannah Dane right now!
Update 1/20/2022:
So, I’ve been on the platforms since it launched in the summer of 2021. Do I still feel the same way that I did when it first started? Actually, yes. I have been really happy with Kindle Vella. Readers tend to come and go in waves, but I have a small group of readers that come back every week for new episodes. I have had a few months where I earned more than I ever had in a month from my books before and this series is now my highest earning series to date.
I completed The Disappearance of Susannah Dane and I am now working on the sequel, The Absence of Aurelia Perez.
I do plan on releasing both of these books in paperback, once the exclusivity period is done (90 days after the last episode release,) and I’m excited to see how that release goes.
Recently, Amazon released Kindle Vella on the Kindle App, which makes it much more accessible to Android users. I am personally reading on the platform more than before because it is easier to use. I have high hopes that this will help more readers find and use the platform as well.
