These two Audible original stories are ones that I stumbled upon in a happy accident. I already knew that I liked stories by Michael Buckley, since I was raised on The Sister’s Grimm series, and I was thrilled to find something I could listen to with my kids.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this story. I listened to both of them in the car during a road trip and I’m so glad we did. The time literally flew by and the whole car was laughing. It inspired a lot of fun conversations and we still quote this book weeks later. These stories are narrated by Kate Winslet and they honestly made me love her, more than I already did, because her performance is hilarious and so unexpected. The voices she does in this show a range that I’ve never seen before from her and she nailed every single one.
After checking the Amazon reviews while grabbing the book descriptions for these books, I was definitely not surprised to see that the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. The main characters, Barnacle, Garlic, and Melancholy, are so absurd and so terrible but so lovable at the same time. This story is something that the entire family will enjoy, as long as you have a hearty sense of humor.
These are Audible originals, so you can’t find physical books anywhere but I wish that we could! These stories are so funny and so original, that I want to give them to every middle-grade reader I know.
The Weirdies Book Description:
This is a very, very sad story. The characters suffer terrible tragedies. People die in unspeakable ways. Only a truly horrible person would be amused by their misfortune.
Nevertheless, it is kind of funny.
My advice is that you listen to this all by yourself. People can be judgy.
If you’re a fan of A Series of Unfortunate Events, Edward Scissorhands, or the darkest bits of Roald Dahl, the Weirdie triplets – Barnacle, Garlic, and Melancholy – will feel like old friends. After being left behind when the entire estate of Deadeye Manor is packed up for a doomed vacation cruise, the triplets have to learn how to fend for themselves. (When a staff of 200 servants has taken care of your every need, even brushing your own teeth is a mountainous task.) From their time at the Our Lady of the Perpetual Side-Eye Orphanage to their adoptive home on picture-perfect Sunshine Circle, the Weirdies have a lot to learn about the world…but, at least, they have each other.
The Weirdies Get Weirder Description:
Narrated by Academy Award winner Kate Winslet comes the sequel to Michael Buckley’s tragically hilarious family listen The Weirdies.
The Weirdie Triplets and Miss Emily are settling into Deadeye Manor when, against all logic, their parents return from the dead! Even worse, they want Barnacle, Melancholy and Garlic back, sparking a truly unusual effort to prove that Miss Emily is the best parent for them.
Will the family get justice? Will the triplets succeed in their ridiculous fundraisers to pay for the lawyer? Why are there so many raccoons in the courtroom? The only way to find out is to listen to the tragic, troubling, absurd tale of how the Weirdies get weirder.
Do Yourself a Favor
Listen to these books with kids, by yourself, with your significant other, with your dog, with your goldfish, whomever. These books are really a little sliver of light in a stressful time in the world and each time I sat down in the car and turned the story back on, it truly made my day better. I probably looked like a lunatic driving through traffic with a giant smile on my face, but that’s a price I’m willing to pay. The only thing that bothers me is that there isn’t a third Weirdies book yet!
