Diving In to Leslie Kim #101
In this post, Iβm going to chat a bit about the mythical creature, the Undine, that is featured in Leslie Kim Serial #101.
When I was researching interesting mythical creatures, I came across the Undine. I certainly did not make it up. The Undine in LK #101 is pivotal to the story line. Once I settled on using an Undine and a Grootslang in the story, it basically wrote itself.
, βUndine, also spelled Ondine, mythological figure of European tradition, a water nymph who becomes human when she falls in love with a man but is doomed to die if he is unfaithful to her.β

The last part of that quote is really important. I wanted to play with this idea in a few ways.
First, I imagined an Undine that falls in love with a man and therefore looks mostly human. However, I also added the element that if the man that she loves dies, then she will die too. Almost as if their souls are connected in some way.
Secondly, I wanted to challenge the idea that she could only love a man. The mythology doesnβt say that the Undine canβt be unfaithful. So, I decided that she would fall in love with a female Kapatonian (alien in the series).
Things go south for this Undine when her lover and her soulmate are at odds with one another.
The Undine in my book is name Nora, and her soulmate is a human man that she fell in love with prior to their love from Earth to Kapaton. I thought it would be interesting if she could basically live forever if she was able to find multiple soul mates before the first one dies. Thatβs now how things end for Nora, but itβs possible that she had lovers before Albert and Layla.
Nora is one of those characters that I just really liked. And I think you’ll like her a lot too.
