I’ve Looked into Mechanical Keyboards for Years…
My husband first introduced me to mechanical keyboards back in 2017, when I first got “serious” about my writing. He tried to convince me that I should just get a mechanical keyboard to make typing easier and faster, and reduce the strain on my fingers and wrists from stretching over my laptop’s touchpad. But mechanical keyboards are kind of expensive and I wasn’t sure if I would even like it. Some people said that typing on the keys, which are generally louder than a laptop keyboard, is annoying. It sounds like writing on an old-school typewriter.
Well, recently he decided to just buy one for me as a surprise and I am actually shocked by how much I love it. I doubted that a mechanical keyboard would help me write faster, but I’ve found that it does! The keys themselves are easier to push down and because of the little “click” noise they make, and the fact that they are raised up more than my laptop keyboard was, I make fewer typo mistakes.
This post is basically just me being excited about my new keyboard and maybe even looking for an excuse to write something 😉 This post also has lots of product links, so you can see what I’m talking about, but I’m actually not an Amazon affiliate right now, nor am I working with Ducky. Just including the links so you can find these things easily if you are into that!
What is a Mechanical Keyboard?
A mechanical keyboard is a little bit different than a regular keyboard (and not just because it is more expensive and – obviously cuter.)
The keys have switches beneath them (that’s where the clicky sound comes from). The keys themselves are interchangeable and you can even by super cute replacement keys with characters or fun colors. My keys are currently light pink, navy blue, and hot pink. The cute factor wasn’t why I originally looked into the keyboard but I do love it. The keyboard also matches my mouse, headphones, and the candle on my desk, so that’s a bonus.
The mechanical keyboard that I have is from Ducky, which promises that it provides “the ultimate typing experience.” The one my husband picked out is the Ducky One 3 series, One 3 TKL Fuji. (Not sponsored, but hmu Ducky!)
I really love that the keys have a matte texture, so my fingers don’t slip. I tried to show the depth of the keys with the pictures, but it really is helpful to have the keys separated from each other more than a traditional laptop keyboard.
Setting up the keyboard is obviously just as easy as any other keyboard. Simply plug it in to a free USB slot and you’re all set!
Other Things I’m Loving At My Desk
I also recently bought a few goodies for my desk. I bought some new notebooks. I go through quite a few notebooks because I am always writing down notes from books I’m reading, to-do lists for clients and personal writing projects, story ideas, and well – you get the idea. On top is my Kindle Paperwhite. This is actually my second Paperwhite since my first eventually gave out on me for reasons I could not comprehend. Bummer!
I also randomly decided to buy this candle which I’m including just because it smells so amazing and it instantly brightens my mood.
Do you use a mechanical keyboard?
One aspect of mechanical keyboards is that different types of switches feel differently to type on and vary in noise level. My keyboard has blue switches, which were designed for writers and coders. Some people find them obnoxious because of the noise, but I kinda like it! Here’s an ASMR video of someone typing on one, if you are curious about what it sounds like!
