My First Kindle Vella Story is Complete!

For those of you that have been following The Disappearance of Susannah Dane, you know that I recently wrapped up the story. It is now completed on Kindle Vella, with a total of 31 episodes and about ~74,000 words. If you haven’t read that story yet, you can click here to check it out. The first three episodes are free! I started writing the episodes back in April and releasing them on the platform in June.

The Disappearance of Susannah Dane has enabled me to launch bookish merch, interview other Kindle Vella authors, and inspired me to keep writing in the series.

The New Kindle Vella Story

So, now that The Disappearance of Susannah Dane is done, what is next? Today, I am launching the first episode in The Absence of Aurelia Perez. This is the sequel to my first Kindle Vella story, so it features the same cast of characters as they embark on a new mystery.

The Absence of Aurelia Perez: A Paige Parker Mystery

Description of the Book:

The Sequel to The Disappearance of Susannah Dane. // It’s the almost the end of Paige’s senior year. All of her friends are making plans to go to college and Paige is still working at Heirloom Antique Shop. Since the disappearance of her best friend, Susannah Dane, Paige has built a reputation for sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong. Miguel has asked for her help in locating his missing cousin, Aurelia, but Paige discovers a side to Ecola Bay that she never knew existed.

The First Three Episodes are Free

Every Kindle Vella story lets you read the first three episodes for free. The first episode launches today, I’d Rather Be Dead, along with the final episode of The Disappearance of Susannah Dane.

Right now, the first three episodes are scheduled to drop on Saturdays. If that changes, I will update you on Twitter (you can follow me @ElizaStopps)

Despite Being a Serial, The Paige Parker Mysteries Are My Longest Books Yet

Before The Disappearance of Susannah Dane, the longest thing that I had ever written was 70k words. DSD comes in at almost 75k, so it’s officially the longest book I’ve ever written. Since I tend to stick around the novella mark of 20-40k words, that might not be too surprising. Nonetheless, it’s a huge accomplishment for me.

It is also the longest I’ve ever spent writing a book, by a large margin. I didn’t have the entire book written before I started releasing episodes, so I’ve been writing and releasing week to week. Sometimes I would get ahead and write a few to schedule, but most of the time, the readers were following along as I created it.

I wrote this book from April – October, which means it took me nearly 6 months to complete the story. That’s not a bad thing, but prior to this, I had written in big sprints. The Leslie Kim Serials take me about two weeks to finish writing (though usually much longer to edit) and that is in part because they are so short. But I also meticulously plot everything out before I sit down to write. While I had a roadmap with The Disappearance, I let myself take rabbit trails and add onto the plot as I went. With The Leslie Kim Serials, I tried to keep them short, but without those same constraints, I really was able to dig into the characters and the setting.

Follow, Like, and Enjoy The Absence of Aurelia Perez on Kindle Vella

It is so fun getting feedback from readers as I write. Even if it is a DM to let me know that I need to make a grammar correction, I still love to get it. I think it has made my writing better than ever and I’m so excited to see where this new story ends up.

Thank you to my readers that have followed along on this new Kindle Vella journey! I know it is a new platform, so it takes some getting used to, but your support is so amazing. Thank you for your patience and I hope that all of my US readers will enjoy the stories (and hopefully the international ones will have access soon!)
