Why It is Important

Everyone’s reasons for this will be different. But it is important for me to exercise as a writer because when I am overweight, my carpal tunnel is significantly worse. It is painful to type for long periods and I can forget about holding a pen. When I lose weight, the swelling in my hands starts to go down and it just hurts. I recently had preeclampsia during my pregnancy, and it made this very difficult for me. I could hardly write my signature until I lost the first 20 pounds.

My Tips

Walking

Lots of writers use their time on a long walk in nature to collect their thoughts, imagine story lines, and even dictate their books. I enjoy walking because it gives my eyes a break from screens and it is easier for me to walk for a few hours than it would be to work out in my home. I know getting out is a challenge right now, but if you can find an out of the way nature path where you won’t run into many other people, it might be a nice escape during this time.

Yoga

Yoga with Adrienne has a few videos that have really helped me. Its hard to write when your shoulders are aching, your hands are numb, or your back is sore for poor posture. I will link some of the most helpful videos down below.

Consistency

I work out for an hour, 6x a week. I try to walk and practice yoga at least once. The other days I typically do weight training or HIIT workouts. I know it is simple to say walking and yoga. But intentionally working on posture, stretching your hands and shoulders, and getting away from the computer for a bit, these two simple tips can change your life. Especially if you do them with consistency; at least an hour a day, almost every day.
