Character Development & A Free Short Story!

by | May 31, 2022 | Author Life, Publishing, Writing | 0 comments

Recently, my friend Pamela and I got together and discussed the topic of character. What is it that separates a good character from a bad one? If you’ve read any of my book reviews, you know that I love a good character-driven story and I really focus on characters in my own books. That’s why I was thrilled to be asked to collab with Pam for this project!

Pamela from The Picky Bookworm is one of the editors I work with for my books and she edited the Paige Parker Mystery series for me. I was also featured on her podcast, where we talked about Kindle Vella and ghostwriting (which is my day job.) So, I was all in when she said she had created some character worksheets and wanted us to create a character together. We had a brainstorming session and came up with a fictional character named Korey Brookes.

On The Picky Bookworm website here, you can find the character worksheet for free and see how Pam and I filled ours out!

My contribution to this was partly to write a short story featuring our main character. I used the character worksheet to inform my decisions as I wrote about Korey. This proved to be a fun and challenging exercise for me. When Pam suggested that Korey should be part of the CIA, I wasn’t sure how the project would go!

I had to do some research for the story to try and represent Korey as a federal agent and her husband Todd as a military man. Of course, I had to add a little bit of a science fiction twist to the story.

I hope that it will be interesting to check out the character development worksheet and then see what I was able to come up with. Maybe you will even be inspired to write and share your own short story!

You can grab this story for free by clicking here and downloading the book through BookFunnel. You will have to sign up for my newsletter to receive the story, but don’t worry, I only send out updates when I’m running a sale or releasing a new book.
